This project began when a family living on the Chicago North Shore decided they wanted to completely redesign their backyard. They were yearning for a recreational pond where their kids could swim and play in the sand while remaining in the comfort of their backyard. They also wanted their backyard to be innovative, aesthetically pleasing, and to mimic a natural habitat. The homeowners expressed interest in an environmentally friendly pond that conserved as much water as possible.
When the Reflections team arrived to the scene, there was an existing pond that was only a few thousand square feet. We completely removed that pond and worked closely with the landscape architect to start fresh with a brand new design for the backyard. While designing the pond, we worked side by side with the homeowner to achieve the desired shape and function.
This project resulted in a very happy family. We designed and built a 20,000 square foot pond, with 16,000 square feet of open, usable recreational water space. The remaining 4,000 square feet were utilized as a constructed wetland filter, built using our proprietary filtration system. The Reflections Water Gardens Filtration System is one of the most efficient filtration systems you will find and the homeowners were pleased to be saving so much water. Because the homeowners did not want stone to go all the way around the perimeter of the pond, we designed it so that grass and plant life met the edges of the pond. We then scattered large glacial erratic boulders throughout the pond to mimic a spring fed glacial pond.
