Rock & Gravel Pond Cleaning: When is the Right Time?

All rock and gravel ponds should be cleaned out at least once a year. Over the course of a year, ponds naturally collect silts, sediments, and heavy organic matter that need to be removed.

It is important to filter out these materials in order to reduce the diseases and parasites that often occur when the environment begins to warm. Doing so also reduces nutrients that stimulate more algae growth in your pond.

Overall, cleaning your pond will make it a healthier and safer environment for your fish while simultaneously making it more attractive. The best time to clean your pond is in the spring when fallen leaves and debris from past seasons have accumulated.

POND CLEANING PROCESS

In starting the pond cleanout process, we set up portable pools in which we temporarily store instead of draining the pond water. By reusing as much of the water as possible this way, we can recycle up to 8,000 gallons of water per site. This is better for the environment and helps to better acclimate the fish by eliminating temperature or pH changes.

Once the water is removed, we remove the fish. Rest assured knowing they are inspected and provided with a special container and life support system. Protecting the fish who live in your pond is a top priority.

Many companies power wash the gravel and rocks in their clients’ ponds, but this often strips the surface of its biological film. At Reflections Water Gardens, we use recycled water to flush organic materials out of the rock and gravel.

We then clean all filters, reconnect the pond pump, and clean out the water filter box. Before replenishing the pond, we also make sure to trim any overgrown plants.

Once the environment is clean or pond cleaning is done, we refill the pond with remaining and fresh water as well as a water balancer to make it safe for the fish. In most situations, we will leave the water feature running upon completion.
