Read This if You Are Considering Natural Pond Installation

You can’t go wrong with a natural pond. Not only does installing one enhance the aesthetic and recreational value of a backyard, but it also comes with a host of health and environmental benefits. Since natural ponds are not quite as mainstream as traditional pools, homeowners have no shortage of questions about the installation process. Our president, Larry Carnes, answers some of our most frequently asked questions below:

Why should I install a natural pond in my backyard?

Why shouldn’t you install a natural pond in your backyard? There are so many reasons why I recommend a natural pond installation to our customers. First, it adds beauty and aesthetics to a backyard — which will undoubtedly increase your home’s value. Second, natural ponds need much less maintenance than traditional pools. And finally, natural ponds don’t use health-harming chemicals like chlorine…which also makes them eco-friendly.

Do natural ponds have drainage issues?

No! They are a low-maintenance backyard water feature, so they self-filter and self-drain. With the proper design and professional installation, drainage is a non-issue.

Is anything specific required for natural pond installation?

Very little is required for natural pond installation. We just need a sizable backyard, a loose vision from the homeowner, and site access.

What if I already have an in-ground pool in my backyard?

Not a problem! We can convert your in-ground pool to a natural pond. We’ve done this for many homeowners in the past who want to make the switch from a chlorinated pool to something more health- and eco-friendly. Or, given that there’s enough room in the backyard, we can work around the traditional pool and install a natural pond for homeowners who want the best of both worlds.

Can you describe your design and installation process?

Our design and installation process starts with an introductory call during which we will find out the following from the homeowner:

  • How long they’ve been thinking about their potential pond
  • Why they want a pond/what piqued their interest in one
  • Their definition/vision of a “natural pond”

We will also ask to see examples of natural ponds the homeowner has seen and liked, if applicable. We may also schedule a site visit to see the geography of the backyard. Next, we create a mock-up design of the pond and after approval from the homeowner, we begin the installation. It’s important to know that although we employ a team of professional architect designers and use an engineering firm to assist on projects, we always defer to the homeowner’s vision.

How long will the process take?

That depends on how large the project is. On average, from the first conversation with the homeowner to the final day of installation, I’d say the process takes about three to six months. Of course, the larger and more intricate/feature-rich the pond is, the longer it will take to design and install.

How much say will I have in the design and installation of my natural pond?

As long as your requests fall within the realm of possibility, you’ll have as much say as you want to! My goal is to make your vision a reality. Whether you want a natural pool-type of pond, a still pond, or a koi habitat, my team and I aim to provide the highest level of satisfaction.

Are there specific features I can add to my natural pond?

Absolutely. Homeowners sometimes add waterfalls, specific foliage, or koi fish. If you can dream it, we can probably build or supply it.
